Here's an infographic look at how energy issues play out in elections in the world's largest democracy. India is primarily a fossil fuel consumer though it has set ambitious targets to ramp up its use of renewable energies. The South Asian country imports nearly 80 percent of its oil needs. Solar energy projects and natural gas imports are on the rise. The country is also facing a bad loans problem in its bid to increase the supply of thermal coal projects. Frankly, there is not much difference or nuance in the energy policy detailed by the two main competing parties - Congress (I) and BJP. Not that it makes much of a difference. In order to make the transition to renewable energy sources, India needs hand-holding from the international community.
