Fresh Water Wind Farm Takes Shape
The first US offshore freshwater wind farm is slated to be erected in Lake Erie at the end of 2018. One challenge is securing the turbines so they withstand hazards caused by the formation and movement of ice. Carnegie Mellon University helped to solve that problem. University professors placed a giant steel bucket like device upside down on the lake floor. Once in place, the device suctions water out, creating a vacuum that pull it into the floor without drilling or pile-driving. How much interest does your organization have in fresh water wind? What do you view as its potential as well as its challenges?
