In this look at carbon emission trends in the U.S. power sector, a couple of statistics jump out: electricity demand has decreased in seven of the past 10 years, and this lower demand alone has decreased emissions by more than 650 million metric tons. That's more than 30 percent of the sector's actual emissions in 2017, and more than 20 percent of what emissions would have been had demand growth stayed near the annual two percent increase charted from 1996 to 2005.
