Every second residential solar PV installation in Germany since 2017 has included a battery energy storage system, according to an industry news report. That's brought the cumulative total of home solar-storage systems installed in Germany to date up to some 150,000 with an estimated 1 GWh of emissions-free energy capacity.
In a research paper, analysts say that solar-plus-storage systems have reached the edge of profitability across several market segments. They investigate social, technological and environmental drivers, including the ability of solar-storage systems to support national transmission grids and help Germany reach goals of phasing out both fossil fuel and nuclear power generation.
So far, three of four German grid operators have submitted bids to the national regulator to test battery energy storage systems with a collective 1.3 GW of power capacity, according to the news report.
