Consider Having Your Utility Say Thanks Now

Thanksgiving may be considered a time to say thanks, but why then do so many people decide instead to give thanks during the December holidays?

Yes, at the dinner table we may all sit around and say what we’re thankful for, but more often than not we’re mainly giving thanks — via holiday meals, gift giving and so on — a few weeks later.

Maybe your utility should be in the forefront of rethinking that.

That holiday meal/party/gathering you probably hold somewhere around Dec. 15? How about holding it the week of Thanksgiving? Or perhaps you can hold separate Thanksgiving and holiday celebrations.

Just as important as tangible evidence of thanks is making sure you tell employees and customers alike in a sincere matter how much you appreciate them.

But how do you do that?

For employees, a short heartfelt letter thanking them for all they do can fit the bill. Emailing the letter to everyone is fine, but you would earn extra style point if employees received hand-addressed letters through the U.S. mail.

A generic letter to all employees is fine, but you should also double down and have each department head write letters to the workers they supervise. These, too can be relatively generic depending upon the size of the department. If the department is small, however, a more personal touch is needed.

As for customers, there are several avenues for giving thanks.

Email’s a standard avenue, but there’s much more you can do.

As always, your website is a great spot for posting information. Too many businesses fail to take advantage of the electronic “town hall” possibilities a website offers. Your website can be much more than a static collection of information.

Social media also is an obvious way of giving thanks because of the interaction you might have with clients. You might get a malcontent or two chiming in (don’t ignore them), but you’re likely to get positive feedback.

A bill insert — or the bill envelope itself — is yet another way to say thanks.

Expending a bit of extra effort now to say thanks can only help you build your community presence.

Andy, most companies send out thank yous to their customers in appreciation for their business. Customers have a choice whether to patronize them, or their competition.

As regulated monopolies, utilities have you as a captive customer whether you like it or not. So if my utility sent out thank yous, it would be considered a legitimate cost of doing business and factored into my electricity rate. Mine is already high enough, thank you.
