Efforts are being made world over to contain the alarmingly increasing carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Since vegetation sequesters carbon dioxide, countries with large areas of forest or other types of vegetation accounting for reduction and thus achieving the desired net emission levels are allowed to do so under ‘Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)’ of Kyoto Protocol. Afforestation and reforestation are eligible to produce ‘Certified Emission Reductions (CERs)’ in the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, i.e. 2008 – 2012. Forest conservation activities OR activities avoiding deforestation resulting in emission reduction through conservation of existing carbon stocks are however, not eligible at this time. Similarly, agricultural carbon sequestration is not possible yet.
