Being surrounded by steady hands, quiet competence and practiced skill can be very reassuring when you’re responsible for the operation of a large collection of massive, complex and dangerous pieces of equipment. Such was the situation Jennifer Thompson, Operations and Planning Supervisor for the Fayette Power Project of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) near Austin, TX, found herself in nearly four years ago when she assumed her position. As she looked around at those pleasant, competent faces, she began to realize that while she was comfortable now that they had the situation in hand, there was a common look that began to worry her. Approximately half of those faces, those with the most experience and the most competence, were 50-55 years old.
