Have you ever sat around griping about a boss, manager, or co-worker who doesn't "get it" or acts like they know it all? You're not alone; my hand goes up, too. Once when I was dosing out a hefty portion of criticism about an executive I found difficult to work with, a good friend of mine asked, "So what are you doing to contribute to the problem?" more...

After nearly 25 years of working with leaders I know I can get a bit obsessed with extracting leadership lessons from some of the most obscure experiences. But these lessons leaped right out when a World War II veteran described his experiences as a member of a B-29 bomber crew. Even though the point of what he had to say had nothing to do with leadership, I was fascinated with the lessons embedded in his message. more...

I later mentioned it to my wife and she explained that he wouldn't go to the dentist because it's one of his two fears: dentists and airplanes. Funny thing. This is a retired nuclear physicist who traveled the world by airplane his entire career. He's a colorful character and still sharp as a tack. Up until a couple of years ago he was still crawling under his old jeep rebuilding the transmission and testing a variety of gunpowders for his home-built guns. Afraid of dentists and airplanes? Go figure. more...

These models centralize administrative and transactional activities in an employee service center as well as combine programmatic activities into centers of expertise. This approach is often referred to collectively as shared services. A key selling point of this model is that site-based generalists or business partners, relieved of time consuming administrative burdens, can be more strategic. Unfortunately, simply shifting administrative work to a service center does not elevate a business partner to a trusted advisor for management; therefore, many transformations falter. The shift to a leading practice HR service delivery framework requires a structured approach to overhauling and elevating the business partner role; however, most energy companies tend to focus the transformation on the design, build, and launch of the employee service center and fail to make critical changes to the business partner role. more...

While things are still grim in many sectors, there are heartening signs that an economic recovery is either underway or coming soon. The American Bankers Association's Economic Advisory Committee, for example, expects gross domestic product (GDP) to increase 0.5 percent in the July-September quarter, after falling for the last couple of quarters. Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, even suggests that economic recovery could take place by the end of this year. more...
