Con Edison, the utility company that serves 3.3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, NY, has upgraded its outage map (http://apps.coned.com/stormcenter_external/default.html) to the new Storm Center 3 (SC3) provided by iFactor Consulting. SC3 is packed with changes to enhance the user experience and allow Con Edison to deliver more information to its customers on a variety of devices. Built on Microsoft Bing Maps version 7, SC3 provides support for iPhone and Android web browsers.
In addition to mobile support and the move to Bing Maps 7, SC3 employs enhanced data flows and formats to streamline and minimize the content for use on mobile networks. The combination of these changes will give Con Edison a great boost in page rendering times, performance, and scalability, with initial tests showing up to a 70% reduction in the data requirements for the application. SC3 also provides enhanced clustering functionality with support for thematic clusters, which allows use of different sizes, colors, and labels to distinguish each outage cluster.
“Our upgraded outage map gives our customers timely and accurate information at their fingertips 24 hours a day,” said Marilyn Caselli, Con Edison senior vice president, Customer Operations.
