Energy audits are commonplace in the industry, but design and promotion can be key to participation

Chartwell Inc. - 03.20.2012

While the vast majority of utilities offer some form of energy audit, customer participation rates across North America remain relatively unchanged in recent years, according to Chartwell industry data featured in its new report, Energy Audits and Upgrades 2012.

Utilities can maximize certain features of audits, such as offering dollar-for-dollar cost comparisons for suggested energy efficiency upgrades to increase customer participation in making more energy-efficient choices within their home or business. Promotional efforts and financial incentives, such as rebates, can also bolster adoption.

“There is a correlation among utilities with strong marketing and advertising campaigns and those with greater participation in energy efficiency programs,” says Will Adams, editor for Chartwell. “A customer segmentation strategy can help utilities make strides in encouraging program participation, and the subsequent change in customer behavior.”

Energy Audits and Upgrades 2012 also addresses new home construction programs, and the potential for utilities to work with customers from the ground up to implement more efficient features designed to save energy and money over the life of the structure.
