Moving toward a Smart Grid future means that utilities must improve in three basic technology areas: communication networks, sensors and analytics. Utilities and Independent System Operators (ISOs) are faced with a need to understand the grid in a spatial context, mainly because of the grid’s distributed, yet connected nature. Decisions become more and more complex as more intelligence is gained about the grid (i.e., more data is collected). Spatial wide area grid awareness helps utilities and ISOs understand the complex interaction between all the players, including the network of distributed assets, personnel, consumers, sensor data, transmission line status, and other data collected. All of this information can be visualized through intelligent multi-layering of data and correlation of the data to analyze the connections and interactions. With Space-Time Insight, geospatial 4D visualization can be customized for users and specific business processes.
