Evaluating the Business Case for Replacing Customer/1

Today more than 40 million North American utility customers are billed by utilities using the Customer/1 billing system developed in the 1980s- 90s. These outmoded and inflexible Customer/1 systems are costing utilities and utility ratepayers real efficiency and money, and can hinder regulatory compliance and business growth. Most legacy Customer/1 systems do a good job billing customers on yesterday’s standard rates, but few in the industry would willingly count on them to bill today’s variable time-of-use rates or be flexible enough to accommodate heightened customer service expectations and mandated customer response requirements.
