On a green hilltop in south Salem, the Griffin family is quietly leading the way to Oregon’s energy future. With a wind turbine, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a solar water heating system, they are generating much of their own electricity and all of their hot water. The 1.5-kilowatt wind turbine serves as a demonstration project for small wind systems in low- wind areas and is connected to the Portland General Electric power grid. It is expected to provide about 55 percent of the Griffin’s electricity. With Energy Trust incentives and Oregon Residential Energy Tax Credits, the family was able to invest in both solar and wind power—and a more sustainable future for their children, Robby and Gillian.
