DSCADA Talk

By Bill Opalka, Editor-in-Chief, Topic Centers, Energy Central, September, 02, 2009 - When fire hit a rural Connecticut home and a downed power line endangered response teams, the actions of Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) were anything but routine. With residents trapped inside the burning building, firefighters didn't have to wait the seemingly interminable minutes it would normally take for a utility crew to arrive and cut the electricity. Instead, in a control room nearly 80 miles away, technicians at a CL&P operations center were able to cut power to the structure less than a minute after receiving the emergency call.  more...

Redefining Roles: Duke, PG&E Talk Smart Enterprises

By H. Christine Richards, Editor-In-Chief, Intelligent Utility Magazine, August, 05, 2009 - A smarter grid often conjures up visions of meters, electric vehicles, and home energy displays -- essentially the tangible elements. But what really makes these technologies -- and many others -- feasible are the systems that are running behind the scenes. So, this brought up a question for me: How do smart grid projects impact enterprise architecture? To find out, I spoke with Brian Abrahamson, chief architect and senior director, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), and Charlie Ward, enterprise architect, Duke Energy.  more...

Better Leverage SCADA: Systems Expand to Support New Challenges and Needs

By Charles Newton, President, Newton-Evans Research Company, Inc., March, 04, 2009 - In two recent 2008 surveys conducted by research firm Newton-Evans, utility officials acknowledged the importance of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), energy management systems (EMS) and related control systems in the development of a smarter grid. Among American officials, the role of the control center and related budgeting for control systems upgrades and new systems from 2008 to 2010 ranked second only to the expenditures planned for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). Among respondents from the international community, planning for control center systems came in just ahead of AMI and automated meter reading (AMR) programs.  more...

Open Architecture Networks Maximize Real-Time Control and Access to Plant Floor Data (Flexible infrastructure can be scaled for local or enterprise wide use)

By James Clark, Product Specialist, Systems Planning, Schneider Electric, June, 23, 2003 - Many equipment suppliers today are promoting their “open” systems, how their systems are designed around “standards,” and how those systems can be “seamlessly integrated” into existing infrastructure. Unfortunately, many facility managers have found that supposedly open systems don’t provide the interoperability they expect. Understanding the goal, driving forces and advantages of open architecture networks will help facility managers find a system that provides the greatest benefits.  more...
