Transmission and Distribution: AREVA delivers Hydro One Networks’ Energy Management System upgrade

Alstom Grid - 02.25.2010

AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Division has delivered an important system upgrade to Hydro One Networks Inc., the largest operating subsidiary of Hydro One Inc., which is wholly owned by the Canadian Province of Ontario. The new energy management system (EMS) is based on AREVA T&D’s renowned e-terra™ application suite and is running at Hydro One’s primary control center in Barrie, Ontario and its backup control center in Richview, a neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. The system monitors and controls 97 per cent of Ontario's electricity transmission system, covering over 1 million square kilometers.

Hydro One now benefits from all the features of e-terraplatform version 2.5, which includes essential elements to help utilities comply with North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC’s) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. NERC CIP standards define the minimum requirements to enable a reliable electrical system and all North American organizations involved with the electrical network are subject to them.

“At Hydro One we believe we must embrace technology and innovation and forge intelligent partnerships to deliver the most value to our customers and shareholder,” said Mike Winters, CIO at Hydro One Networks. “For nine years now, we have considered AREVA T&D as much our partner, as our supplier.”

“Our software upgrades are designed to preserve our customers’ investments in their critical systems. We are extremely proud of the technology which is developed and delivered out of our Worldwide Center of Excellence for all Network Management Solutions in Redmond, WA in the USA,” added Jean-Michel Cornille, Executive Vice President, AREVA T&D Automation.
