Tantalus, a leading provider of Smart Grid communications, today announced that Atlantic Municipal Utilities (AMU) has chosen Tantalus for its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployment. The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) contributed to the project with funds from a US Department of Energy (DOE) grant to develop a more intelligent and more efficient energy grid.
AMU selected Tantalus based on the technical advantages of TUNet® (the Tantalus Utility Network), which provides consumption reporting, power quality monitoring, outage notification and voltage alarms for AMU and its customers. TUNet will also enable AMU to control select air conditioning and water heater loads.
“We vetted several different communications vendors, but none of them were able to match the robustness of Tantalus’ TUNet suite,” said Steve Tjepkes, AMU’s General Manager. “Tantalus offers the flexibility and functionality that we need to implement and scale our smart grid system.”
The Atlantic, Iowa utility becomes the first in the area to benefit from the Tantalus/Itron strategic partnership, which delivers a wide range of smart metering and smart grid benefits to multi-service public utilities. The partnership ensures that public utilities across North and Central America and the Caribbean will be able to provide increased levels of customer service, greater service reliability, improved efficiency and access to usage information that smart metering delivers.
“During the proposal process, AMU asked some really tough questions,” said Eric Murray, president and CEO of Tantalus. “We consider it an honor that in the end they selected us to carry out their vision and to use DOE resources wisely. We expect this to be one of many Tantalus projects to serve the heart of the Midwest.”
Tantalus provides two-way, real-time data communications networks to monitor and control electric, gas and water utilities. TUNet® – the Tantalus Utility Network – is an end-to-end WAN/LAN/HAN communications system that operates with 220 MHz RF, 900 MHz, and IP-based networks including Fiber, WiMAX and GPRS/cellular, either individually or in combination. TUNet’s patented and patents pending technologies are purpose built for the Smart Grid. The Tantalus network unites a utility’s applications, making advanced metering, outage management, power quality monitoring, load control, and distribution automation cost-effective and practical throughout both urban and rural service areas.
