Data analytics explored as a business process game-changer

Chartwell Inc. - 03.22.2012

While analytics have been utilized for years to improve business processes, the industry is benefitting from today’s technological enhancements that can allow utilities to maximize the rapidly increasing amounts of data now available through smart meters and other sources. Chartwell’s recent report, Data Analytics 2012, details how utilities are confronting the challenges and opportunities head-on of obtaining information from their operational activities.

As data analytics efforts ramp up, utilities are assessing their systems and resources. Some utilities are working to form internal groups and departments to best make use of the available data for business process improvements and problem-solving, according to the Chartwell report.

Analytics is not always a process of instant gratification, as data must first be evaluated. “A process of data governance must be established to consistently supply clean, useful data to be used for analytics,” says Russ Henderson, research analyst at Chartwell Inc.

The report also features case studies on analytics success stories, including Florida Power & Light’s theft detection capability improvements and We Energies’ reduction in the number of days to identify ‘no consumption’ metered accounts.

Chartwell's Data Analytics 2012 report is offered through Chartwell's Smart Grid Service, which includes research on advanced metering infrastructure, data management, demand response, online energy displays, prepay energy services and revenue assurance.
