As smart meter deployments continue, some utilities turn to public carrier solutions

Chartwell Inc. - 02.13.2012

While many utilities have chosen communications solutions such as mesh or power-line communications for smart grid deployments, some have chosen cellular networks to overcome geographical or structural barriers, according to Chartwell Inc.

Public carrier solutions can serve as an option for utilities that want to outsource this function so they can focus on their core utility requirements, Chartwell's Public Carrier Networks 2012 report states. These solutions have also been deployed by utilities serving sparsely as well as densely populated service territories.

“As utilities continue to evaluate communications standards, some have considered the enhancements recently achieved by cellular technology, such as data speed or latency standards,” says Russ Henderson, research analyst for Chartwell Inc. “Opting for a hybrid approach is another consideration for some utilities.”

The report also notes that:

• Several high-profile projects involving public carrier networks could be a tipping point for further adoption;

• Cellular communications systems are being used for both high- and low-density advanced metering projects; and

• The latest cellular technology is nearing or surpassing the data speeds and other standards that some utilities have set for their wireless networks.

Chartwell's Public Carrier Networks 2012 includes case studies on Duke Energy, Texas-New Mexico Power and the City of Norcross, Ga. The report is offered through Chartwell's Smart Grid Service that includes research on advanced metering infrastructure, data management, demand response, online energy displays, prepay energy services and revenue assurance.
