Drake Landing Solar Community Wins Energy Globe World Award

SAIC Energy, Environment & Infrastructure, LLC - 01.12.2012

The Energy Globe Foundation awarded the 2011 Energy Globe World Award to the Drake Landing Solar Community project, a program Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] was instrumental in creating. SAIC played a major role in the Drake Landing project, helping the community become the first in North America to use solar seasonal storage technology.

The 52-home Drake Landing Solar Community in Okotoks, Alberta uses a solar-thermal seasonal storage concept that SAIC helped design and implement. Now, those 52 homes are profiting from a system that stores heat from the summer below the surface of the earth. In winter, the stored energy is used to meet 90 percent of the community’s energy needs. In addition, each home has a discrete solar collection system on its roof, which provides about 50 percent of household hot water.

Recognized as the "greenest community in Canada, maybe the world" by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Drake Landing has been honored with several other awards, including the Emerald Award for Climate Change from the Alberta Emerald Foundation and the Gold Award from the International Awards for Livable Communities program.

The Energy World Globe Award is one of today’s most prominent and prestigious environmental prizes, where projects from all over the world are showcased that conserve and protect national resources or that employ renewable energy. The Energy Globe World audience made the final award decision on Nov. 25 in Wels, Austria and chose the recipient from five individual categories: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Youth. The golden Energy Globe Statue was presented by Austrian economics minister Reinhold Mitterlehner and Energy Globe founder Wolfgang Neumann to Doug McClenahan of Natural Resources Canada, who initiated and led the development of this innovative project. “It is nice to receive this international recognition and we look forward to working with many of the same team members on a much larger project,” he said. Drake Landing was also the winner in the Globe World Award “Fire” category.
