For many years, MSIV leakage was one of the leading causes of lost generating time in nuclear power plants. Machining the surface of a valve's poppet, weighing 1,500 lbs. (680 kg) or more, had to be done in a shop capable of handling contaminated materials. Tools for the in-place machining of a valve's interior were almost nonexistent, requiring the machinist to be working at a 45-degree angle in a contaminated environment. Several years ago, however, Climax developed a solution for the routine milling and polishing of MSIVs. Since then the solution has been widely adopted by nuclear facilities throughout the world.
