A mini-hydro station at Kennebec Falls on the Serpent River First Nation was a cooperative project between Ontario Hydro and the local community. The siphon system was engineered by Kinectrics to make lowimpact hydro development possible at sites with aesthetic and environmental constraints. Cost-effectiveness of the project was maximized as no expensive headworks or in-water civil construction was required. This advantage means many natural sites have the potential for economical “green power” production to meet community needs.
