Over the last several years, technology for energy storage has improved while costs have declined. It is now becoming economical to apply this technology more broadly in utility distribution and transmission systems. For the past decade, S&C has been supplying large medium-voltage (MV) PureWave UPS™ Systems using battery storage technology. More recently, it has been supplying controls and interface equipment for large battery energy storage projects. This paper covers the advantages of large MV PureWave UPS Systems and NAS batteries coupled with the S&C power conditioning system, and the field results of applying this technology. It will explain the opportunities that exist by the use of energy storage to improve power quality, defer asset replacement, to peak shave for large industrial applications, and its use with renewable technology to store energy to make it easier to dispatch.
