Softening demand across major gas markets coupled with growing supply has precipitated a significant shift in the world of gas. One year ago the question was "where is the gas going to come from?" But now the market is asking "Who is going to need all this gas?" as economic downturn has combined with new production of shale gas and LNG to create a global supply glut. Furthermore, recession has driven European gas demand down 7% in 2009, resulting in a 50% year-on-year decline in spot gas prices. But oil prices remain strong, resulting in a growing gap between oil-linked, long-term gas prices and short-term spot gas prices. Could Europe be at a tipping-point?

Join Platts editors as they discuss the changes in gas markets across the globe.
