The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) today released a report on the status and technology of electric vehicles and the potential role that utilities will play in integrating electric transportation into resource planning.
The report, Transportation Electrification: A Technology Overview, provides a detailed status on the commercial rollout of plug-in electric vehicles, describes key vehicle and infrastructure technologies, and outlines plans and actions that utilities can adopt in facilitating the more widespread use of these vehicles.
“The report can be used by utilities as they plan for electric transportation,” said Mark Duvall, director of Electric Transportation research at EPRI. “These plans can address the adoption of plug-in vehicles and charging by their customers, adding charging infrastructure, and minimizing the impacts of widespread vehicle charging on electric distribution systems.”
The report identifies potential grid impacts as well as the variables associated with charging infrastructure and time-of-use and variable pricing options for charging electric vehicles.
