This paper examines how utilities and the energy efficiency industry can design and implement a smart grid that achieves greater energy savings. While many years of research and development have focused on smart grid technologies, there is a gap in the awareness of how energy savings fits in. Our goal is to raise the level of discussion about these issues by highlighting whether buildings are ready to integrate with smart grid investments that are charging ahead. We begin with an overview of the smart grid and its relation to energy savings. Then we discuss the hurdles for buildings to be able to interact with a smart grid. Next we emphasize four ways in which energy savings can be achieved using smart grid infrastructure, and we conclude with challenges and policy recommendations.
