So How Did Coal Really Fare in 2017?
While the long-term future for U.S. coal remains grim, "America's miners had a lot to be happy about in 2017," according to this E&E News article. A confluence of factors overseas drove an eight percent increase in domestic coal production through the first 11 months of 2017, compared to the year-earlier period. Nonetheless, the overseas upside won't offset the U.S. downside in the years to come, analysts predict.
