China's heralded 'solar highway' closed after thieves stole one of the panels
The highway has three layers. The bottom layer consisted of an insulating material, the middle layer had photovoltaic cells and the top layer was protective concrete that could withstand the force of heavy vehicles using that stretch of road. It could generate 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to power 800 households and cost about $42.50 per square foot.
